Gustafson family reunion in Rush City, Minnesota during 1920s

standing:

seated:  center - Charles Gustafson (born in Sweden in July, 1851, died January 28, 1923?), left of Charles is his son, Frank Oscar Pierson (January 15, 1882 - April 14, 1938), and to right of Charles is his second wife Annie Greenburg Gustafson (March, 1859 - December 20, 1926).  To the right of Annie Gustafson is Martha D. Pierson (June 24, 1885 - August 1981), wife of Frank Pierson.

front:  in low chair, Bernice M. Pierson (October 21, 1919 - July 28, 2008).  on ground: three children and infant Roger Oscar Pierson (September 21, 1924 - November 10, 2006).

Charles Gustafson and his second wife, Annie, seem to have been married before 1896.  Children of Charles living with Charles and Annie Gustafson in 1900 were:

- Abina Gustafson born in Michigan in May, 1876, died in Illinois October 22, 1942 who married Hans J. Christianson

- Frank Oscar Gustafson (who later changed his family name to Frank Oscar Pierson) born in Minneapolis January 15, 1882 and died in Minneapolis April 14, 1938.

- Oscar Gustafson (who is shown by the historical records to have retained the Gustafson family name) born in Minneapolis March 27, 1884 who died in Winnebago County, Illinois in April 1971.

- Frida J. Gustafson born in Minneapolis June 1886 - June 16, 1962 (later Frida Peterson).

- Anna J. Gustafson born in Minneapolis July 25, 1888 died there October 20, 1961.  Anna married E. Gustav Anderson, a jeweler, in 1918.

- Edward Karl Gustafson (who retained the Gustafson family name) born in Minneapolis March 18, 1890, died in Rock Island, Illinois May, 1969

- Joseph E. Gustafson (who later changed his family name to Joseph Pierson) born in Minneapolis November, 1892

Annie Gustafson had three children, of which two, Ester and Lillia were living with Charles and Annie in 1900.  Lillia seems to have been born to Annie and Charles following their marriage:

- Ester I. Gustafson born in Minneapolis January 1889

- Lillia V. Gustafson born in Minneapolis January 1897

Frank Oscar Pierson was born 'Frank Oscar Gustafson' according to his 1918 draft record.

Annie Greenburg Gustafson (June 24,1885 - August 1981) holding her granddaughter Bernice Pierson looking stylish in her cape.  Bernice Pierson (October 21, 1919 - July 28, 2008) was mother of Regina Eckenrode Lagakos.

Donald Michael Eckenrode, March 10, 1910 - December 12, 1999, class of 1933 St. Francis College.  Donald was son of Michael Demetrius Augustine Eckenrode, born in Germany, February 7, 1875 and Mary A. Metzger born in Pennsylvania in October, 1880.

In both the 1900 Census and in the Cambria County records, Mary's family name is listed as 'Metzgar'.  Mary's mother, Caroline was born in Germany in April 1853, and emigrated to the U.S. in 1872.  Her husband's name may have been John.  By the 1900 Census, Caroline, age only 47 is shown as a widow, after having been married for 23 years.  Interestingly, the Census also indicates that Caroline had 7 children, of whom only 5 were living.

In the 'Metzgar' household are Caroline's five surviving children: Mary Metzgar, then just turned 20 and her sisters Sophia A. Metzgar, born September, 1882 who married Edward B. Kuntz in 1904, Annie Metzgar, born December, 1887, Alice Metzgar, born January, 1889, and brother Carl Metzgar, born April, 1883.

Michael Eckenrode and Mary Metzgar were married August 6, 1902, again with Mary's name in the marriage record listed as 'Metzgar'.  Michael D. A. Eckenrode was the son John Eckenrode, born September 1845 in Pennsylvania and Julia Eckenrode, born January, 1849 in Pennsylvania of German parents.  Michael D. A. Eckenrode and his father, John, and all his brothers were coal miners in Cambria County, Pennsylvania.

Michael and Mary also were proprietors of the Metzger House hotel and tavern, which Mary seems to have inherited from her mother.
